The set includes two purpose-built carbon steel tools: a Burr Setter and a Peening Tool. Together, they handle the two critical steps of setting a copper or brass rivet. The Burr Setter seats the burr (the small washer-like cap) flush against the leather; the Peening Tool then rounds over the post tip so the finished rivet is neat, secure, and snag-free.
Both tools are finished with a zinc-plated, chromate-passivated coating for corrosion resistance, and have a knurled (cross-hatched) grip in the centre so they stay firmly in hand even when struck with a mallet. At 101mm long, they sit comfortably between your fingers and give you full control over placement.
🔩 What is a Rivet and Burr, and How Does Setting Work?
A rivet is a two-part metal fastener: a post (the stem with a domed head) and a burr (a small flat washer). You push the post through both layers of leather from the front, slide the burr onto the post from the back, trim the excess post length with wire cutters, and then use these two tools to lock everything in place permanently. The result is a fastening that won't pull apart, won't unscrew, and looks clean on both sides.
What Each Tool Does
🪣 Burr Setter (3.75mm hollow cup tip)
The hollow end fits over the rivet post and presses the burr washer firmly and evenly against the leather surface. This ensures the burr sits flush with no tilting or uneven pressure before you peen.
🔘 Peening Tool (5mm solid dome tip)
The solid rounded end strikes the trimmed post tip and spreads it into a smooth dome, locking the burr in place and eliminating any sharp edges on the back of the work.

⚠️ Workshop Grade Tools: Minor tooling marks, finish variations, scratches, cosmetic blemishes and handling marks should be considered normal and do not affect function. Store in a dry, low-humidity environment; apply a light coat of oil for long-term storage.
