A button stud is a small, mushroom-headed fastener that is fixed to one piece of leather. The other piece has a keyhole-shaped slot cut into it. To close, the head passes through the round part of the slot and the stud's neck slides into the slit, holding the two pieces together. Button studs are sometimes called Sam Browne studs or collar buttons. They are a simple, hard-wearing alternative to snaps and give a classic look to wallets, flaps and straps.

These studs are made of solid brass and come in two parts: the stud itself, and a screw that goes in from the back of the leather. Nothing needs to be hammered or set, and they can be taken off and refitted later. Each pack contains 10 studs, each with its screw.

Key Features

🟑 Solid Brass

Brass all the way through, with no plating to wear off with handling.

πŸ”© Screw Back

Fits with a screwdriver. No setter or hammer is needed, and it can be removed later.

πŸ„ Rounded ~6 mm Head

A bulbous head that slips through the slot easily and holds once the neck is seated.

πŸ“ ~3 mm Neck

Room under the head for the slotted piece of leather to sit on.

How to Fit

1

Punch. Punch a small hole where the stud will sit, just large enough for the screw to pass through.

2

Fit the stud. Push the screw through from the back, place the stud on the front and tighten with a screwdriver until both bases sit firmly against the leather.

3

Cut the slot. On the closing piece, punch a round hole just large enough for the ~6 mm head to pass through.

4

Add the slit. Cut a short, straight slit leading out from that hole. The neck of the stud slides into the slit to close.

πŸ’‘ Tips

βœ“ Mind the leather thickness. The neck is ~3 mm tall, so the slotted piece should be thinner than that to seat under the head.

βœ“ Start the slot small. Cut the hole and slit on the tight side and test. A slot can be enlarged, but one that is too loose will not hold.

βœ“ Fit before lining. Install the stud before the piece is lined, so the screw head is hidden on the inside.

βœ“ Stop it working loose. A small drop of thread-locking adhesive on the screw keeps the stud from unscrewing with use.
