A set of French-style stitching irons designed to create clean, slanted stitch holes or marks in leather prior to hand sewing. These tools are manufactured from heat-treated stainless steel for durability and consistent edge geometry, and are intended for regular workshop use.

Purpose & Hole Type

These irons are used to mark or punch angled holes for traditional saddle stitching. Unlike round-hole chisels that create circular perforations, French-style irons produce slim, slanted holes that guide thread into a refined, elegant stitch line with a distinctive European aesthetic.

✓ Slanted tooth profile creates classic angled saddle stitches

✓ Clean hole geometry supports straight, consistent seam alignment

Material Information:

4Cr13 (also known as 40Cr13 or 1.2083) is a martensitic stainless steel comparable to AISI 420. With approximately 0.36–0.45% carbon and 12–14% chromium content, it offers high hardness after heat treatment (HRC rating), good corrosion resistance, and strong wear resistance — making it well suited for precision leatherworking tools.

Set Options

Choose the configuration that best suits your workflow and project size:

Set Type Best For
2 + 10 Prong Set Includes 2-prong (curves and corners) and 10-prong (long straight runs)
2 + 5 Prong Set Includes 2-prong (tight areas) and 5-prong (short to medium runs, belts, wallets, straps)

📐 Practical Difference:

The 10-prong speeds up long stitch lines and production work. The 5-prong offers more control on medium-length sections where a longer iron might be difficult to accommodate. The 5-prong is also more economical.

Usage Requirements

✓ Required Surface

Use only on a punching board, HDPE cutting base, or a poly board. Soft surfaces reduce penetration efficiency and can damage tooth tips.

✓ Proper Technique

Strike vertically using a wooden, nylon, or leather mallet/maul. Do not twist the tool while embedded in leather — pull straight up to prevent tooth misalignment.

Tips & Technique

  • For cleaner exits on thicker leather, slightly dampen veg-tan before punching.
  • When working on long seams, overlap the last tooth of your previous punch to maintain consistent spacing.
  • Use the 2-prong iron to finish corners instead of forcing a long iron into curved sections.
  • For maximum stitch consistency, maintain uniform thread tension — French-style holes visually amplify tension differences.

Care & Storage

  • Wipe clean and dry after use
  • Store in a dry environment
  • Apply light oil only if storing long-term in humid conditions

Workshop Tool Finish — Cosmetic Marks Policy

These are functional workshop tools. Minor surface marks, machining lines, light scratches, or small handling bumps may be present from manufacturing and handling. Such cosmetic imperfections are normal for tools at this price point and do not affect hole accuracy, alignment, or stitching performance.
