Whether you're using stitching chisels, pricking irons, drive punches or hollow punches, the surface beneath your work is just as important as the tools themselves.

Our HDPE Punching Board is machined from solid engineering-grade High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), a material widely used in industrial applications where toughness, impact resistance and low friction are essential.

Unlike hard surfaces such as granite, steel or hardwood, HDPE absorbs the impact of repeated punching, helping protect the cutting edges of your leather tools while providing a stable and reliable work surface.

Why HDPE?

HDPE has long been used as a sacrificial work surface in workshops due to its unique combination of properties. Here is what sets it apart.

🛡️ Excellent Impact Resistance

HDPE absorbs the shock of repeated chisel strikes, reducing stress on your tools and resisting cracking or chipping even after thousands of impacts.

🧊 Low-Friction Surface

HDPE's naturally low friction means chisels release cleanly after every strike, making repetitive punching smoother and far less tiring over long sessions.

✂️ Protects Your Cutting Edges

Softer than tool steel, HDPE acts as a sacrificial surface so your stitching chisels, hole punches and drive punches stay sharp for longer.

💪 Tough & Durable

Unlike brittle plastics or wood, HDPE does not splinter or crack under repeated impact. Surface impressions are normal and expected. Usable on both sides for double the working life.

💧 Resistant to Moisture & Chemicals

HDPE does not absorb moisture, will not warp with humidity changes, and resists most workshop chemicals and leather finishing products. Wipes clean with a damp cloth.

🔬 Tested in Our Own Workshop

This is not simply a sheet of plastic cut to size. The material was selected after extensive practical testing in our own leather workshop, where the board withstood thousands of repeated stitching chisel strikes in the same area without structural failure. Surface impressions developed gradually, as expected, but the board continued to perform reliably throughout. One characteristic we particularly appreciated was how cleanly stitching chisels released after every strike, making long punching sessions noticeably smoother and less effortful.

Care & Usage

  • Always place the board on a solid, stable surface such as a workbench or granite slab.
  • Rotate the board periodically to distribute wear evenly.
  • Use both sides of the board to maximise its service life.
  • Clean with mild soap and water when required.

Surface punch marks are a normal sign of use and do not affect the performance of the board.

This is a workshop tool, not a decorative product. During machining, handling and transportation, the surface will acquire minor scratches, machining marks or scuffs. These are purely cosmetic and have no effect on the performance or durability of the punching board. Like any quality workshop tool, it is designed to be used, not displayed. Within the first few minutes of use, your stitching chisels and punches will begin leaving their own impressions on the surface. Those marks are a normal part of the board's life and are exactly what it is designed for.
