Understanding Our Leather Grades
Leather is a natural material, celebrated for its unique beauty, warmth, and individual character. Each hide possesses a distinct shape, size, color, and natural markings like scars or blemishes. These unique traits are part of its inherent charm and contribute to the personality of every finished product.
Because of these natural characteristics, leather is graded based on the presence of imperfections. This grading does not affect the inherent quality or durability of the leather itself, but rather indicates the number of natural scars, cuts, blemishes, or other unique features present on the hide.
We buy and sell our leather as Tannery Run (TR), which is a standard industry method. A Tannery Run typically consists of:
- 20% Grade A
- 50% Grade B
- 20% Grade C
- 10% Utility Grade
Here's a breakdown of what each grade signifies:
Grade A
- Allows for 1 to 2 small defects in the prime, most visible areas of the hide.
- May have 3 to 4 minor defects in the non-prime areas (like the belly or edges).
Grade B
- May have 3 to 4 defects in the prime areas.
-
Can include 6 to 12 inches of damage or waste in non-prime areas.
May feature some small holes in the non-prime regions of the hide.
Grade C
- Allows for more than 12 inches of damage or waste.
-
Can have 3 to 4 defects in the prime areas and can have holes in non prime areas with significant color variations across the hide.
