Most punching boards are simply too hard. They dull chisel tips, bounce back on every strike, and push a raised ring around each hole that marks the leather. The OKA Factory Wood Grain Cutting Board comes from a Japanese maker of leathercraft tools. They tuned its hardness to their own chisels: firm enough to support a clean cut, soft enough that the blade goes in with little effort and isn't damaged. It's the same idea as a Japanese kitchen knife on a wooden chopping board.
Applications
- Punching stitch holes with stitching chisels and pricking irons
- Round hole drive punches
- Skiving knife and utility knife work
Key Features
🔪 Gentle on blades
Chisel tips stay sharp longer and are less likely to snap when you pull them out.

🎯 Easy penetration
No push-back, so the chisel cuts through cleanly with less force. Needles also pass through the holes more easily when you sew.

🧵 Leather-friendly
Holes don't bulge on the underside, and the grain texture leaves almost no marks on the leather.

Maintenance
- Roller method: when the surface starts to feel uneven, press a roller firmly over it to flatten it.
- Iron method: after heavy use, cover the board with parchment paper and press it with an iron. This seals the holes and makes the surface flat again.
⚠️ Note: Don't drive the chisel too deep into the board. It won't improve your stitching, and levering a buried tip can snap it.
