Sheong Shi Tannery - Navy Blue (Milled) - 1.3/1.4mm

Navy Blue Milled is a chrome-tanned, full-grain cowhide from Sheong Shi Tannery, a soft, pliable leather with a natural pebble grain, made for projects where the leather needs to wrap, fold and feel good in the hand rather than hold a rigid shape.

The hides are drum-milled, which relaxes the fibres and brings the natural grain up into an even pebble texture across the surface. The finish is a matte semi-aniline: colour sits on the surface, yet the grain stays open, so the leather still takes in oils, conditioners and water. The navy reads deep and understated rather than glossy.

At 1.3/1.4mm with a medium-soft temper, it has enough body to keep its form but bends and wraps easily. The flesh side is soft and suede-like, and is coloured navy as well, so the reverse looks and feels finished and many projects won't need a lining. That makes it especially good for book and journal covers, cushion covers, and other soft goods where drape matters more than structure. For pieces that need to stand up on their own, pair it with a stiffener or reinforcement layer.

The colour is applied to the grain and the flesh side separately, and the core of the leather is white. Cut edges will show a pale line, so plan to finish them with edge paint, or use turned or folded edges, which suit book and cushion covers well anyway.
