ECOSTICK® 1816B is a professional water-based contact adhesive developed by INTERCOM (Italy) for leather goods manufacturing, upholstery, footwear, and industrial laminating.
💧 Why Water-Based Matters
The adhesive uses a high-solids polymer dispersion rather than solvent carriers. This allows strong bonding performance while eliminating the solvents commonly found in traditional contact adhesives. The result is a near-odorless adhesive that is safer for indoor workshops, while still delivering excellent bonding performance on leather and synthetic materials.
Unlike many general-purpose glues, ECOSTICK® 1816B combines:
✓ High Initial Tack
Grabs immediately when surfaces meet
✓ Flexible Bond Lines
Won't crack or fail when leather bends
✓ Heat Reactivation

Key Technical Characteristics
💪 High Bond Strength
ECOSTICK® 1816B develops high initial bonding strength and strong final adhesion once cured. Final bond strength is achieved after about 48 hours. The adhesive film remains flexible rather than brittle, preventing bond failure when materials bend or flex.
🧳 Excellent Leather Compatibility
The formulation performs well on:
🌿 Vegetable-Tanned Leather
Perfect for traditional leatherwork
🔬 Chrome-Tanned Leather
Bonds reliably to modern tanned hides
💧 Oily Leather (up to 15% grease)
Works even on greasy hides
Many water-based adhesives struggle with oily hides, but ECOSTICK® 1816B maintains reliable adhesion even under these conditions.
🔄 Flexible Bond Line
Once cured, the adhesive forms a flexible polymer film that tolerates bending, stitching, and forming operations common in leather goods manufacturing.
⚗️ High Solid Content
The adhesive contains high levels of active polymer solids, meaning less material is required to achieve effective bonding compared with many competing products.
This also contributes to faster drying times.
🎯 Surface Retention on Materials
Due to its high viscosity, the adhesive remains mostly on the material surface rather than penetrating deeply into the substrate. This allows effective bonding of:
🧽 Porous Leather
Stays on surface, doesn't soak through
🧵 Thin Textiles
Won't bleed through delicate fabrics
🛋️ Foam Layers
Bonds foam without over-penetration
while maintaining excellent spraying performance.
💨 Spray Compatibility
ECOSTICK® adhesives are accurately filtered, providing excellent spraying capability with minimal risk of lump formation.
⏳ Resistance to Aging
The adhesive system is highly stabilized, providing:
☀️ Yellowing Resistance
Stays clear over time
⏳ Aging Resistance
Bond strength doesn't degrade
💦 Humidity Resistance
Won't break down in moisture
These properties help maintain bond durability over time.
📦 Long Shelf Life
ECOSTICK® adhesives offer long storage stability, providing greater security even if the adhesive is used long after purchase.
Adhesive Efficiency & Coverage
Due to its high solids content and controlled viscosity, ECOSTICK® 1816B typically provides greater usable coverage per unit volume compared with many commonly used adhesives.
In solvent-based adhesives, a large portion of the applied material evaporates during drying. ECOSTICK® forms an effective bonding film using thinner application layers, meaning less adhesive is required to achieve strong bonds.
📊 In practical leathercraft use this usually results in:
higher coverage from the same quantity of adhesive
reduced adhesive consumption
cleaner glue lines
This efficiency comes from:
⚗️ Higher Active Polymer Content
More bonding power per drop
🌬️ Minimal Evaporation
Less waste, more adhesive stays put
🎯 Better Surface Retention
Doesn't soak into leather unnecessarily
📏 Thinner Film Thickness
Less adhesive needed for strong bonds
Environmental & Safety Characteristics

Application Methods
📋 Standard Method (Double-Sided Application)
- Apply adhesive evenly to both surfaces.
- Allow adhesive to dry until tacky.
- Join the parts within 20 minutes.
- Apply pressure using a roller, clamp, or press.
🔥 Heat Reactivation
If the open assembly time is exceeded, the adhesive film can be thermally reactivated.
- Heat the adhesive layer to 60–70 °C.
- Join the materials.
- Apply pressure.
⏱️ Extended Working Time: Reactivation is possible for up to 48 hours after application.
