Round-hole stitching chisels punch a row of fully round holes through leather before hand sewing. Unlike diamond or slanted chisels, which cut angled slits, round holes give a straight, upright stitch line with an even, beaded look. It is a cleaner, more modern seam, and a forgiving one for beginners, since the stitch looks the same whichever way the thread is laid.
This set gives you a 2-prong, a 4-prong and a 6-prong chisel, all with a 1 mm round hole, in your choice of 4 mm, 5 mm or 6 mm stitch spacing. The chisels are made from high-carbon steel, which takes and holds a sharp working edge for clean holes strike after strike.
🔬 About High-Carbon Steel
High-carbon steel is a hard, tough tool steel that holds a sharp edge well, which is why it has long been used for chisels, punches and cutting tools. It is not stainless, so it needs a little care, set out below. A darker surface patina over time is normal and does not affect how the chisel cuts.

Choosing a Spacing
The spacing is the distance from the centre of one hole to the next. It sets how dense the stitching is and how bold the seam looks. Many makers settle on one spacing for their whole range, so it becomes part of the look of their work.

💡 Tips for Clean Holes
✓ Use the right surface. Punch on a punching board such as our HDPE Leather Punching Board. Hard surfaces like stone or steel will damage the prong tips, and soft ones stop the prongs going through cleanly.
✓ Use a mallet, not a steel hammer. Strike with a non-metal mallet or maul, such as our Nylon Hammer, keeping the chisel upright.
✓ Overlap the last hole. On a long line, set the first prong into the last hole you punched before striking again. This keeps the spacing even all the way along.
✓ Pull straight up. Hold the leather down and lift the chisel out vertically. Twisting or levering it can bend or snap a prong. Our Stitching Chisel Puller Aid Tool makes this easier on thick leather.
✓ Do not over-drive. The tips only need to pass through. Driving deeper makes the chisel harder to remove.
Care & Safety

- Wipe the prongs clean and dry after use, and apply a light coat of oil before storing, as high-carbon steel will rust if left damp
- Store in a dry place with the prongs protected
- Keep your fingers clear of the prongs when positioning the chisel
